Journal Topics All Classes: Friday, April 14, 2023

Select a prompt from 550 Prompts for Personal and Narrative Writing OR select one of the following: No Friday Freewrite today--select either a topic below, or a topic from 550 Prompts. You may write in your journal or notebook if you do not have your journal.

1. Recently, the Los Angeles Unified School Board voted to change the LAUSD School Calendar. The most important difference is the potential loss of one week of Winter Break. This reduction of Winter Recess from three weeks to two weeks is the most impactful change. Students WOULD get out of school a week earlier, but many students are upset with the proposed change.  Write a respond in which you argue for OR against the new calendar.

2.  Do you think that streaming television shows on Netflix, Paramount, Hulu etc should release all or several episodes at once, allowing watchers to "binge" OR do you think each episode should be released once a week? Discuss the pros and cons of releasing several episodes at once or one episode per week.

April is National Poetry Month

In honor of April, National Poetry Month---today and at least twice weekly, we will read and examine and explore poetry. Today is day one. On day one, YOU will have the chance to browse various sources to: find AT LEAST one poem that you like. Why will you like it: maybe because of its rhyme; or its imagery; or its use of language like vernacular; or its subject matter; or its universal theme. Maybe it sounds like magic. Maybe you can write a poem like it.  So, where to look, where to go? I have hyperlinked several places for you to browse for poems. I also have several poetry anthologies including Phototry by Hiram Sims; Death by comb by Camari Carter; and others. Select a poem from here, or from the hyperlinked list. Carefully read the poem, and then complete a SOAPS analysis. You will also record yourself reading the poem on Flipgrid and lastly, you will share with a partner.
