American Literature Period 1, 3, and 4

All Classes: Call your Dramatization Team mates and practice your Scene. Assembly your Props and Costumes! For 4th period, we will begin on Monday! Can 1 or 2 group Volunteer from 4th period for Monday? For periods 1 and 3, we will present on Tuesday, your Block Day. 
Also: Extra Credit for Students who bring their parents to Student Lead Conferences on Thursday.
Act 2, Scene 2: A Raisin in The Sun 
Re-read Act II.ii (Act 2, scene 2). Then answer each of the following questions. Some questions will require a longer response. Other questions can be answered in briefly.  You DO NOT NEED TO WRITE THE QUESTIONS. (in the packet, begin at page 1585; in the book page 106)
1. Where had Walter been going for most of the day? Why do you think he goes off instead of going to work? 
2. Why does Momma decide to give Walter money? How much does she give him, and what does she tell him to do with it? 
3.  Describe Walter's reaction when Travis says he wants to be a bus driver when he grows up. 
4. Ruth also says something that might be considered "not nice" to her son Travis.  What she she say to him that we hear through Travis? 
5. Why do you think Momma decides to give Walter the money? What change does it represent? 
6. Why does Walter tell Mr. Lindner (man) that he handles his mother's business? What do you think he was trying to do? 
7. Why might it be significant that Mr. Lindner only talks to Walter? 
8. Why does Ms. Lindner come to talk to the Youngers? 
9. Does Mr. Lindner have a point when he says, " You just can't get people to change their hearts."? Discuss.

American Literature Homework: Periods 1 and 3

Select one of the following and write a response that is at least a page. Feel free to use your opinion, personal experience or observation. Remember though, that you must use three or more adjectives or words from the Character Trait Handouts and Qualities of Character Handout:
1. Journal Topics for the Week of March 13, 2018
Select any one of the following journal topics. A few choices deal directly with the play, “A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry. No matter which journal topic you choose, be sure to include at least two or three character traits and/or qualities of character. 
 1. Do you think Ruth is a good wife? Why or why not? Discuss your thoughts, feelings and opinions about Ruth Younger as a wife. Remember the play’s setting. 
2. What about Walter? Do you think he is a good husband? Discuss your thoughts, feelings, and opinions about Walter as a husband. Remember the play’s setting. 
3. Do you think it is easier for men or women to achieve in today’s society? Once you express your opinion, support it with evidence, opinion, anecdotes, and/or examples.  
4. How might growing up in poverty or with working class parents impact a child. 
2. Re-read Act II. scene II. Prepare to discuss the meaning of the passage. 
Period 3: Also prepare for reading quiz on Act II scene I.
