American Literature Period 3

Be sure to carefully answer the close reading questions that follow. Although you do not need to write the questions, be sure your responses are complete and that you only use your understanding of the play. Do not consult other sources.
1.       Who gets up first in the Younger household? What might this suggest about rank?
2.       Why is little Travis so sleepy? What cant he go to sleep at night?
3.       Why cant the Younger family easily use their restroom? What does this reveal about their social class or status?
4.       Why does Walter give Travis a dollar, only later to have to ask for carfare? What does this suggest about Walter as a father?
5.       Why does Ruth scold Walter and tell him that he never says anything “new”?
6.       What plan does Walter have and how does Ruth figure in it?
7.       What details suggest that Ruth is tired?
8.       What details suggest what kind of grandma Lena is?

American Literature period 4

1. Study for Reading Quiz on Act 1, part 1.
2. Select your entire house or apartment OR select any one room of your house. Carefully observe it and the items in it. Then, name the room and sketch either the room or several rooms in your house or apartment. You may use pencil for your sketch.  Write down a description on another sheet of paper of the room or rooms you are sketching/drawing.
3. Bring your independent reading novel.

American Literature Period 4: Harlem and Dreams

1. Finish your handout on "Analyzing Two Poems" by Langston Hughes. Re-read each poem and mark up.  Then create one Right There (Level 1); 1 Author and You (Level 2) and 1 On My Own Question about one of the poems.
2. Finish the questions at the bottom and the chart on the back.
3.  Try to model one of the two poems: either Dreams or A Dream Deferred. Bring a full rough draft to class on Thursday.

American Literature Period 3 Homework

1. Finish your self assessment using the Target Learning Standards for Eleventh and Twelfth Grade.
2. For each strand: Reading Literature; Reading Informational Texts; Writing; Speaking and Listening; identify learning targets that you can do competently and those you are unsure about.
Then, write a reflection answering the following: What surprised you, if anything about the learning targets? Which learning targets are a challenge for you or pose the most difficulty? Why do you think so?
3. Join the following sentence sets using a conjunctive adverb: 1. The officials assessed a fifteen yard penalty against the team. They threw the coach out of the game.
2. Beneatha wants to become a doctor. Her brother thinks she should become a nurse
3.  Rosie argued she wast driving over thirty. The officer gave her a ticket.
4. Veronica believed the class would be easy. She had all her brother's notes from the previous year.
5. A good resume can be a door opener in the job market. Good interview skills are most important to the job

American Literature Period 1 and 4

1. Re-read "A Raisin in the Sun" as needed.
2. Add to Character Chart based on characters appearance, actions and quotes using your Character Chart Handout.
3. Complete your SOAPS and your Academic Summary.
4. Be sure that you have RE-Read the opening of the play where the Younger Apartment is described, and do your best to sketch the apartment.
