ERWC Period 1

Answer the following questions on your own paper. If you type the answer, you must print out. Do not email these to me. There will be a reading quiz on Monday. Answering the Questions will help you study. Be sure to also re-read carefully, scenes 1-2
1. When Kent states "I thought the King had more affected (likes or prefers) the Duke of Albany than Cornwall, and when Gloucester agrees and states, "It did always seem so to us, but now in the division of the kingdom, it appears not which of the dukes he values most...." a set of expectations is created.  What is the expectation, and how does King Lear, through his actions defy it?
2. When Lear says, "Meantime, we shall express our darker purpose--" what do you think he means? Why does he use the word, "darker"?
3. He asks for a map.  Why is a map an excellent symbol for what will follow in terms of the ceremony and the characters actions?
4. What does Lear do to Kent?  What does it reveal about the human condition that Lear does this when Kent was attempting to point out a flaw?
5. Why does the King of France choose to marry Cordelia, despite the fact that she has been stripped of her dowry? What does this reveal about the King of France's character?
6. How can we the audience tell that Goneril and Reagan know that Lear most loved Cordelia? (Please cite the text, or quote for this answer)
7. Discuss the impact of the closeness in age between Edmund and Edgar. Why is it symbolic that their names both begin with the same two letters?
