American Lit. Homework Period 4

1. Continue reading your novel--Lit Circle Novel--
2. Write the poem assigned by Mr. Hiram.. Select any picture from your book Photoetry.  Then write a poem or rap inspired by the picture.  Very little cussing or none at all. At least 25 lines.
3. Remember that poem or rap or Open Mind about your Literature Circle Novel? That is still due by Thursday--and it is based on your novel's main or minor character.

Homework American Lit period 5

1. Carefully read as much of your first chunk as possible in your Literature Circle Novel.  Complete your Roll Sheet  AND The Plot Profiler! That means ALL students will complete two jobs.

Due Thursday: Upload a video of you reading the first two pages of the novel, or your favorite portion of your chunk. You should read for understanding, clarity, character and pacing.  You will need to bring headphones, and will be able to offer feedback on a peers reading from your group!

Lit. Circle Expectations

Literature Circle Expectations and Assignments

1.       To read the minimum number of pages per week to ensure that the entire novel will be read on specified date.

2.       To complete the required Chapter/Chunk Engagement Strategies which may change each week: Dialectical Journal; Padlet Response with Chat; Flip Grid Passage Reading; Character Analysis; Theme and Social Connection; Literacy and Freedom Connection.

3.       To complete required role sheets before entering class each Thursday.  To print out, or have neatly written responses.

4.       To actively participate in literature circle group discussion with my group. To not dominate the discussions and to seek ways to engage my text with these from The Narrative of Frederick Douglass.

5.       Expect to respond in writing using my novel as a springboard.  I may be asked to write a found poem; haiku or tanka, rap, freeverse or modelled poem.

6.       To possibly interact with the author using social media.

7.       To bring my novel or electronic copy to class at least three time per week: on my block day, on Thursday—the literature circle day, and on Friday.

8.       To turn in all assignments on time.

American Literature Periods 4 and 5: Article of The Week

Today, we will read our class Article of the Week: The Black Table Is Still There. You may download the article, and use Kami or another program to make annotations and underline the main ideas in each paragraph. After carefully reading, you will: Write a Summary + Reflection; Create 2 Right There; 1 Think and Search; 2 Author and You and 2 On My Own Questions using the Graphic Organizer; and Complete the SOAPS.  These may be uploaded or turned in at the end of class today.
Homework: List all of the groups or clubs or cliques that you belong to that may be segregated by ethnicity/class/interest or hobby/ team. Then write a one-page narrative about your own self segregation. When and where do you self segregate? Is it at school? At home? activity--if so which? What do you do? What shared interest do you have or enjoy? 2. Log on to IXL using your user name and password. Then take the IXL 11th Grade ELA Diagnostic Test. Write down/Print a copy of your results.

The Rationale Behind Literature Circles

Today, you will have a SILENT Working Period. First, you will respond to your journals in one page. I will stamp and read your responses and score them. 2.  You will write a one page reflection about your Literature Circle Author.  Your Prompt: Who is this writer, what inspired them to write, and what did I learn that is of note about them? Due today.  3. Then, you will read one of two articles regarding the rationale of literature circles.  Select one of the following two articles: The Benefits of Literature Circles in the High School Classroom  or The Power of Literature Circles in The Classroom . Carefully Read the article, then click on the Google Form to record your reflection.
4. Finally, you will have 15 minutes to meet in your teams and brainstorm the argument

1. Be sure to FINISH you Literature Circle Author Biography sheet, in which you identify key details and biographic information about your author. When finished, review your author biography sheet as you will have a short reading quiz on key aspects of your authors life!
2. Get your book if you havent done so (your lit.circle novel) as we will be reading TWO texts at one time, pretty soon!

Good Morning and Welcome Back!
You may have questions and would like to learn more about strikes and the history of labor unions. Today, we will respond to a quote, share our ideas, ask questions to gauge interest in what work and a living wage really means.
Then it is back to Ethos, Logos, and Pathos as well as connotation and denotation. We will watch the lesson on Nearpod to ensure we understand before applying our understanding to several documents, including the Declaration of Independence
