American Literature period 5
3. 20 minutes-- Answer all of the questions 1-7a on page 252. Ms. Turner will check your answers to questions 1, 2, and 3 for classwork. (including a&b). You may work in pairs to answer questions 1-3. Each students must however, work on his or her own paper. Turn in 1-3 to Ms. Turner
4. Homework: Answer questions 4-7 both parts A&B on page 252. You must title it, Review and Assess, “The Devil and Tom Walker”. Reading Quiz on “The Devil and Tom Walker” .
5. Complete Draft due—neatly handwritten or typed of Student Declaration of Independence, with your first draft.

Study Questions for the "Someone is Coming to Take Your Lap"
Chapter:
1. Why did Mami move Negi and the rest of the family to Santource? After moving to Santurce, the Santiago family experienced a significant improvement in living conditions. List the improvements, compared with the primitive conditions in Macun.
2. Esmeralda experienced discrimination when she started attending school in Santurce, after moving from the rural area of Macun. Describe what happened to her.
3. Why do you think Mami doesn’t like Rita? I mean why do you think she really did n’t like her. Do you think in any way Mami (Negi’s mother) envied Rita? How is Rita much different than Mami?
4. Out of childish curiosity (p. 43 - 44), Esmeralda quizzed her father on the topic of sin. Papi's answers were an ironic contrast of what he practiced. Discuss the irony in his answer.
5. Don Berto, a well respected elderly man, passed away. What does his physical description reveal about the peoples of Puerto Rico? In what ways did his death have an important impact on Esmeralda?
6. Why had Esmeralda devoted three pages (p. 58 - 60) to tell the readers about rain in a certain afternoon in May? Also, describe the way in which Mami and the children played in the rain.
7. This chapter is one about relationships. What relationships are there in this chapter?
8. Homework: Write a prĂ©cis for the Chapter “Someone is Coming to Take Your Lap". Include three discussion questions you would like to discuss on Monday.

The Stranger final Questions
Please finish reading The Stranger by Albert Camus. Please answer the following questions. All are not due tomorrow. Please read as much as possible. We will discuss the poem for a portion of class and then The Stranger.
1.On page 59 (last sentence), what is meant by “it was like knocking four quick times on the door of unhappiness.”Explain briefly.

1. Explain the signficance and the irony, even of Hassan's favorite story "Rostam and Sorab"?
2. What happens politically to Afgahnistan in 1978 and then in 1979?
3. Who is Assef? Explain his views of Amir, his father, and the Hazara people. Why does he think Amir is worse than the Hazara's themselves?

1. Esmeralda Santiago spent a great deal of effort to show that she is an expert in guava. Why did she have such an obsession about guava?
2. Santiago's feelings toward guava seem to have changed over time.
a. What did she remember about picking and eating guavas as a child in Puerto Rico?
b. How did she feel now seeing guavas at a Shop & Save in New York?
3. Pick a favorite food or a food from any aspect of the many cultures you belong-- race/ethnicity; age group; gender; location and describe how you would eat that food. Try to imitate Santiago's version and bring to class tomorrow! Have fun!

1. Look under Websites of Interest on the Right hand side. Click on the link The Poem as Life. This will take you to a google document for your homework assignment. Carefully read and annotate the document "The Poem As Life" as retyped by myself. Pay special attention to the different types of life that poems often reflect. Also read, and re-read the poem Living in Sin and re-read the poem given to you on Friday.
Write out answers to the following: What act(s) or public does the poem "Living in Sin" by Adrienne Rich (this is the poem you had but I removed the title).

3. Re-read your defintions: metaphor, figurative language; symbol; structure; narrative poem, plot diagram. Bring both poems to class on Monday.
